
How much pocket money will students need to bring?
For students staying in the Kastanienbaum Campus, CHF 500 pocket money per month should be enough as all meals are provided.
Will I need to anticipate any other costs while studying at IMI?
Additional costs will be minimal and tend to be reduced to the following:

Laundry - A laundry card needs to be purchased on arrival (accounts department) which is CHF 40 (including a CHF 20 card deposit)

Kitchen clogs/shoes – students whose course includes classes in the kitchen need to purchase kitchen clogs/shoes and can do so at reception for CHF 63 a pair.

Bus Pass – for students travelling down-town frequently it may be useful to by a monthly bus pass (price currently CHF 43 per month)

Telephone Card – can be purchased at reception.

Printing Paper, etc – all kind of stationary you need for your studies should be brought or can be bought in local shops.

Insurance during Internship – Prior to starting your Internship CHF 500-600 have to be paid to cover your health insurance during internship.
Can students open a bank account?
Yes, we suggest students open a bank account as soon as they arrive in Switzerland. The bank Credit Suisse and Post bank will regularly pay a visit to the school in the first days of the semester to explain to all students how to do this.
Is financial aid possible?
Scholarships as such are not available. However, there are alternatives to apply for reduced school fees:

IMI has got a few positions available in Housekeeping, the Library, the Food & Beverage department and Alumni Services. Students may apply for a position and when successful will receive a reduction of the school fees in return for the services provided. Applications are handled on a case by case basis. Direct entry students do not tend to be eligible but students in the Higher Diploma or BA Degree semester have been successful with their application in the past. The Executive Board makes decision on successful applications.

IMI students referring new students to the school will also receive a reduction of school fees for their coming semester.
Do I need Health Insurance?
Swiss governmental law requires every person residing in Switzerland to obtain a general health and accident insurance. IMI arranges the health insurance for all students and the cost is covered with the school fee. Students are covered from the first to the last day of their studies at IMI. Attention: During internship CHF 600 have to be paid in advance for the coverage of health insurance during internship.
How cold is it in the winter months and what clothing is appropriate?
From November until March, temperatures can range from -5 to 10°C. The entire school building and student rooms are heated. A warm coat, gloves, scarf and a hat will be sufficient for the outside. Summers (June – Sept) tend to be warm and temperatures range from 22 to 30°C.
What is provided with the room?
All student rooms have study facilities, refrigerator, washbasin and colour television as well as wireless LAN/internet access. Most rooms have a toilet and bath or shower. Towels (one large and one small) and bed sheets are provided and changed once a week. A large number of rooms have got direct line telephones.
How can students call home or how can they be called?
Most student rooms have got direct line telephones on which students can receive internal and external calls. It is also possible to dial from room to room. To make external calls students can use one of the telephone cabins in the school. Telephone cards can be purchased at reception.
What will the timetable be like?
Generally, classes take place from Monday to Friday from approximately 8:00 – 11:50 and from 13:00 – 16:50.
What can I do during the weekend?
On weekends students are free to leave the school and a vast array of activities are possible. E.g. shopping or visiting the city of Luzern (10 minutes by public transport), hiking and skiing in the mountains (30 minutes away), mountain biking, football, ice-skating, playing tennis, sunbathing and swimming in Lake Luzern, visiting family, sightseeing in Switzerland, visiting other European cities, etc. Luzern is a festival city and offers a great variety of museums, shops, sports facilities, bars and restaurants. There is something for everyone.
At what times are the meals served?

What facilities are available on the premises?
Recreational facilities – a gym, an outside volleyball court, an outside basketball area and a pool table are part of the IMI campus
Computer room – the computer room is available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year
Wireless internet access – students can access the internet with their laptops 24 hours, 365 days of the year, anywhere in the building
Library – the well-stocked library with a constantly updated supply of books, professional magazines and on-line access to publication databases is open daily throughout the semester. The library contains more than 5,000 books and was opened by publishers Butterworth Heinemann. We stock over 30 journals and magazines which provide up to date and topical information and research on all aspects of the hospitality industry. In addition, IMI subscribes to the ‘Emerald’ database which provides access to 160 full text journals and reviews from the top 300 management journals. It is the largest, most comprehensive collection of peer reviewed management journals and online support for librarians, students, faculty and researchers. It is also important to note that under the scholarship system at IMI the library is run by student Library Assistants who are selected every semester on application basis.
Well equipped class rooms – all classrooms are equipped with audiovisual equipment and enjoy day light
Lounge Area – students can meet and study in the student lounge (The Well)
Laundry – self-service washing machines are provided and can be used for private laundry. For the usage a laundry card needs to be purchased in the accounting department.
Student restaurant – in the Swiss Room Restaurant, a 3-course a la carte meal is served
Monday – Friday during the teaching weeks lunch time by students for students. Alternatively students can dine in the main dining hall where a buffet service is available.
Student kitchen – for those students occasionally wishing to cook their own meals a student kitchen is available
Parking – student parking is available free of charge. All cars, including rental cars need to be registered with the school.
When do I have holidays?
All students have one week mid- term break (holiday) per Semester. The mid- term break is usually in week 12 of the semester. This week is free of lectures. However students might have project works going on in this time.
How do I get to IMI for the first time?
All students are picked up at the airport in Zurich or at Luzern train station when they arrive for their first semester at IMI from one of IMI’s drivers. In order to be picked up IMI needs to be informed at least one day prior to arrival about the arriving time and flight/train number. Students receive a USB welcome memory stick upon arrival. There is a lot of important information in digital format, i.e. handbook, IT handout, paid work experience information, financial update and even course materials.
What are the Safety, Security and Hygiene Assurances at IMI?
The IMI University Centre consistently achieves and ensures the highest safety, and security and hygiene standards in accordance with Swiss and European Law. At IMI we have a duty of care to all of our students during their stay on campus in Kastanienbaum and in Switzerland.
